on Filling The Space In Between (2022)
"Filling the Space in Between, a recent collaboration between choreographer Kannen Glanz and composer Jacob Beranek, is one of the most outstandingly successful short ballets I have seen in ages. Here dance and music speak the same language, complementing and completing each other in a vitally convincing sequence of sharply contrasted episodes. A strong yet shadowy narrative discretely underpins both dance and music. It is excellent choreography, boldly counterpointing the music as well as following its structure. Like Ashton, Glanz really understands the arms as conveyors of onward flow and line; like Cunningham he neglects no part of the body from eyes to feet, orchestrating them in crazy balance with each other. The angular poise of the first female solo brilliantly visualizes the jabbing urgency of Beranek’s quartet; whilst the lyrical intertwining of the conclusion matches the uncertain resolution of the music without imitation. These are just two of many visual-sonic images from Filling the Space Between which hover persistently in the memory. If any young choreographer can unite the opposingly rich heritages of Ashton and Cunningham into something genuinely fresh, Glanz looks to be the person."
